Steelers GM addresses why team hasn’t pursued veteran QBs

The Steelers never once reached out to Jameis Winston. Do not expect them to reach out to Cam Newton either.

According to Josh Apler of ProFootballTalk, Pittsburgh Steelers GM Kevin Colbert did not make any attempt at trying to lure either quarterback to the team. Winston recently signed with the New Orleans Saints, while Newton remains a free agent after being released by the Carolina Panthers.

“I can honestly say that we absolutely made no negotiation or any offer to any veteran quarterback,” Colbert said.

Nearly two months ago, Colbert said he was comfortable with who was behind Ben Roethlisberger.

The state of the team is entirely on the health of Roethlisberger. We saw that the Steelers can do very little with a backup quarterback (Mason Rudolph) leading the way. The team’s defense was a top-10 defense in the league, but the unit can do only so much.

In eight games that Rudolph started, the Steelers defense surrendered 16.75 points per game. When Delvin Hodges started, that number increased to about 18 points per game.

Apparently, that was good enough to keep both backups around, via Bob LaBriola.

“Colbert on QBs behind Ben: ‘We know who the backups are. We’re comfortable with who our backups are. We’re comfortable with those four guys (Rudolph, Hodges, Paxton Lynch, J.T. Barrett) entering camp.’

Leaning on the defense led the team to an 8-8 record, but that is not going to be enough to contend for a playoff spot. The Steelers have missed the postseason for two straight seasons.

The Ravens look to be one year away from contending for a Super Bowl. The Cleveland Browns are on the rise. The Steelers have a quarterback that will be 38 next season and his best days are behind him.

To some, it made sense to bring in the 26-year old Winston, who is a former No. 1 overall pick. However, the Steelers have just $6 million in cap space according to Over the Cap. The Steelers appear to have no interest in restructuring any deals this season to bring in another QB.
